One of my great privileges is getting to work with people that are pushing themselves to new levels. 

From coaches who are trying to bring mental training to athletes, to coaches who are trying to start a side-hustle or grow a full on business, this community as a whole is special in that it's not afraid to push hard and face challenge head-on.

Because I know that coaches have that 'athlete mindset' and do not need to be coddled, I hold the coaches I work with to very high standards. 

And the hardest thing I have to witness is coaches self-sabotage right in front of me. Over the years, I've learned that I can shine a light on it and coach them through it, but I cannot force them to believe in a future they won’t let themselves see.

One part of this is that they make a video. Of themselves. Teaching one mindset tool. (You may have seen some of them in our private Facebook group as they share these videos.)
 
For many of these students, this is their first time teaching mental training on camera. For some of them, it triggers feelings of nervousness. Others aren’t necessarily scared of the camera but they self-sabotage in other ways; by getting into a perfectionism mindset, for example. They want everything about the video to be JUST RIGHT. Want to be a Mindset Coach? Learn to sell or you will always work for someone who can.

 

In order to become a successful mental training coach, you have to be able to do these 3 things:

  1. Have Mental Training skills
  2. Be able to TEACH mental training
  3. Be able to SELL mental training

Oftentimes, people are naturally good at one of these, maybe two if they're lucky. Rarely are people good at all three without having to really work at it. That said, you have to do all three in order to be able to make a big impact on your athletes and run a successful business. The good news is, it's not rocket science, EVERYONE can learn how to be good at all three, you just have to be willing to learn. 

In my experience, most people struggle with the selling part above all else; it doesn't come naturally to a lot of people (including me). Although you may prefer to have someone else sell your services for you, the reality is, that's not usually an option.

How do I Reconcile my Personal Beliefs with my Responsibility and Commitment to my Team?

We had the great pleasure to speak with Dr. Jenny Lind Withycombe about diversity among elite athletes.  Dr. Withycombe has over 15 years experience within the field of athletics as an athlete, coach, consultant, sport psychologist, and diversity and inclusion educator. Most notably Dr. WIthycombe has worked with the NCAA, AMCC and the US Rowing team.

Dr. Withycombe often gets asked the question: How do I reconcile my personal beliefs with my responsibility and commitment to my team?

Sometimes, coaches struggle with diversity issues because they can’t reconcile a student-athlete's identity with their own beliefs (i.e. a coach who strongly disagrees with homosexuality based on their religious beliefs). The truth about positive self-talk

There’s a lot out there about positivity and the importance of having a positive mindset: talking to yourself positively, talking to your kids positively, even talking to your pets positively. (Groan... Yes, it’s a thing!)

All this positivity can be a bit much.

And that’s saying a lot, especially coming from someone like me who’s a big believer in the power of the glass-is-half-full mentality. The complication with positivity is that it can be hard to distinguish what is actually helpful and what is just, well, fluff.

That’s why I want to talk specifically about self-talk. Because, self-talk serves as the basis for so many things in our lives: our beliefs, our outlook, our confidence, how we interact with others, and much, much more. But I don’t just want to talk about self-talk alone, I also want to dive into the research behind it to make sure this isn’t just another ‘positive self-talk is great’ article. Yay!
